Payment processing security breaches are not just limited to POS terminals or even internet networks, as a recent data breach of a New York insurer demonstrates.Healthcare Info Security reported this week that Affinity Health Plan notified more than 409,000 customers that it experienced a breach of personal information because of information stored on the hard drives of leased copy machines.
"Like many organizations across the country, we were not aware copy machines contained hard drives that need to be wiped," Abenaa Abboa-Offei, senior vice president of customer and community connections at Affinity, told the news provider.
Though the company said it had no reason to believe that the data had been compromised, but it still chose to "cast as wide a net as possible out of an abundance of caution," it told Healthcare Info Security.
Experts say that the incident is a reminder that even businesses that do not have POS terminals yet copy credit cards on their copy machine can be vulnerable to data breach if they are not careful, and shows the importance of wiping hard drives on leased copy machines before returning them.
