Canadian consumers are spending more per shopping trip for the fifth consecutive month, reported the latest Nielsen Economic Current. The study found that in June 2009, the most recent month for which data was available, consumers were spending significantly more per shopping trip compared to May.
As Canadian consumers continue to make fewer shopping trips overall, this trend could balance out what could have caused an overall decline in consumer spending.
Still, consumers remain savings-focused, with retailers selling more on promotion and shoppers increasingly shifting to value channels, the survey found.
In addition, the economic situation seems to be improving globally, Nielsen reported. The number of consumers who believed their country was in a recession declined from 77 percent in April to 71 percent in June, while the number of global consumers who believed their country would pull out of the recession within the year increased from 23 percent in April to 26 percent in June.
Both the increased confidence and higher spending per trip means Canadian merchants may be able to expect sales to pick up in the coming months. This makes it particularly important for businesses to have payment card processing capabilities, as those that have to turn away customers based on method of payment will miss out on the sales boost.
