Drivers soon may able to wave good bye to feeding the meter with coins and begin swiping through a credit-debit machine, instead.San Rafael, California is testing a number of credit-card payable meters, the San Rafael/Terra Linda News Pointer reports. The trial program is currently measuring public response while estimating the cost of operating and maintaining the credit machines. If the program is a success, the city plans on replacing 440 coin additional operated parking meters with the new credit-accepting machines.
Not only will it be more convenient for shoppers and citizens low on change, but it will also bring in more revenue for the city, the paper writes.
"If you've only got three quarters, thats all you've got to pay with, and people have to rush their shopping. But with a credit card, people buy as much time as they need, if not a little more," Vince Guarino, San Rafael Parking Services Manager explained to the paper.
San Rafael is not the only city considering going coin-less. Washington, D.C. is currently experimenting with solar-powered meters that accept credit cards as well as a pay-by-phone system, the Washington Post writes.
