The city of Santa Monica, California, recently made headlines when it installed high-tech parking meters that have the ability to accept credit cards, debit cards and coins. During the first week in April, city employees installed half of the 100 meters at locations across the city. The meter devices are designed to enable will be able to send information electronically to parking staff working at city hall, to get a better idea of how the program is working. And while the city is forced to pay a 2 percent processing fee for plastic payments, the revenue will increase based on the machines' added capabilities, according to the city leadership.
"The biggest advantage is that the reporting of it is more precise, real time and accessible to staff," Don Patterson, Santa Monica's revenue and operations manager, told the Santa Monica Daily Press. "I can pull up on my laptop how many people parked there today, how much revenue it brought in and how many of those were credit card transactions."
Other communities in the Golden State have been changing their parking meters, replacing them with ones that accept credit cards. The Daily Breeze reports that the city of Redondo Beach will be putting 50 new meters in the west side of the community.
