Officials from the city of Concord, New Hampshire, are considering whether or not to allow residents to pay municipal bills and fees with credit cards, the Concord Monitor reports. The city council will soon vote on a proposal from treasurer and tax collector Michael Jache that would make room for online credit card processing. Jache explained that accepting plastic payments is almost a necessity in today's world.
"Acceptance of credit and debit cards will increase the city's level of customer service," Jache wrote in his proposal, according to the news source.
Under the proposed legislation, American Express would not be accepted, while Visa cards would be accepted online but not at city offices, and customers could use MasterCard and Discover online or for in-person payments.
The most common bills and fees paid with credit cards will likely be for vehicle registration. Jache explained that approximately one in four walk-in customers at the Division of Motor Vehicles office asks if they can pay with a credit or debit card, the publication stated.
The New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles is headquartered in Concord, the state's capital, according to the agency's website. The office handles everything from driver's licenses and registration to ticket payments and driving records.
