Consumers can accumulate more frequent flier miles with major purchases

By Louise Hauser

31/05/2011 - In recent years, more people than ever have been taking advantage of frequent flier and other travel-related rewards that credit card companies offer. However, according to one financial expert, consumers can take advantage of free flights, without waiting to spend thousands on airfare alone.

In a recent interview with CNNMoney, Ken Lin, CEO of Credit Karma, said that people should consider what rewards programs have to offer when making major purchases or taking out a home loan.

"You don't buy a home because you want 25,000 miles, but if you're buying a home anyway, you should look for one of these offers because it translates into a major discount on a flight," said Lin.

Some lending firms, including Lending Tree, offers those taking out loans 25,000 free miles for home loans of $200,000. If a person were to take out a $400,000 loan, then they would receive 50,000 miles to be used on U.S. Airways, United Airlines, Delta, American Airlines and Continental flights.

Other major brands offer payment processing rewards that can benefit customers. Intercontinental recently announced that it would hand out $75 MasterCard gift cards to anyone who stays at one of its hotels for two consecutive weekends in a row.
