Consumers are starting the new year in confidence, suggesting that 2010 will bring a boost in payment processing transactions as shoppers continue to increase spending. The latest Ipsos Reid survey, commissioned by Canwest News Service and Global National, found that 73 percent of Canadian consumers are "optimistic that 2010 will be a good year for creating jobs and getting people back to work," while 67 percent said that their "personal economic outlook for 2010 is bright."
"This had all of the potential to be really serious, but what we've witnessed is a burgeoning optimism since about May that has just continued," John Wright, senior vice president at Ipsos Reid Public Affairs, told the news service.
Canadian consumers are emerging from some deep depths of recession - 14 percent of respondents said that they lost their job this year, and another 14 percent said a member of their household became unemployed. In addition, 65 percent of Canadians said the economic downturn affected them either "a lot" or "somewhat" in 2009.
The continued economic growth is likely to carry consumer confidence well into 2010, making it imperative that businesses with merchant accounts ensure that their POS terminals are equipped to handle a surge in demand.
