As expected, online sales soared on Cyber Monday - the infamous workday after Thanksgiving weekend in which Americans have been prone to do most of their online shopping for the holiday season.Overall, online sales climbed 33 percent over last year, according to a report by IBM. Consumers pushed the average order value up 2.6 percent from $193.24 in 2010 to $198.26 this year.
Perhaps more surprising was the surge in mobile commerce activity, as 10.8 percent of Americans used a mobile device to visit a retailer's website, up from 3.9 percent in 2010. Mobile-based transactions were also up dramatically, reaching 6.6 percent of all online sales, compared to 2.3 percent last year.
"Retailers that adopted a smarter approach to commerce, one that allowed them to swiftly adjust to the shifting shopping habits of their customers, whether in-store, online or via their mobile device, were able to fully benefit from this day and the entire holiday weekend," said John Squire, chief strategy officer at IBM Smarter Commerce.
The figures cap a record-breaking weekend for consumer spending, with an estimated 226 million people taking to stores or online retailers for teh three-day period.
