It may not come as a shock to hear the volume of mobile payment transactions was up considerably from last year, but it may be surprising to hear by how much. PayPal reported on Tuesday that by 11 A.M. Monday morning, mobile-based purchases had already surpassed last year's Cyber Monday by as much as 514 percent.Additionally, this year's Cyber Monday saw global mobile payment volume more than double - 154 percent - compared to an average Monday. This made for a 17 percent surge in global mobile payment volume compared to Black Friday just three days prior.
Putting mobile transactions aside, Cyber Monday 2011 also broke the record for the biggest online shopping day ever. According to a comScore report, consumers spent $1.25 billion online, marking a 22 percent increase over last year.
"Cyber Monday was yet another historic day for e-commerce, with online spending reaching a record $1.25 billion," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. "It was just the second billion dollar spending day on record, following on the heels of Cyber Monday 2010."
