Debit card program can help consumers, merchants give back

By Pivotal Payments

20/10/2009 - Debit cards, which have been steadily growing in popularity in recent years, are more than just a way for consumers to benefit from digital transactions without relying on credit - now debit card users can use their cards to give back to the community.

Affiniy and co-branded debit card provider Tempo announced this week the release of open loop debit cards that offer charitable contribution rewards.

The cards can be used for online and offline purchases as well as ATM withdrawals, and are linked to the consumer's pre-existing checking account. The cards can be used with any merchant whose payment processing equipment accepts MasterCard debit cards.

The Breast Cancer Fund, Greenpeace and Surfrider Foundation also announced today that they are offering Tempo debit cards that can benefit their nonprofit organizations.

"We are thrilled to offer members a new contribution option to help fund our efforts to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future," said Mark Smith, development director at Greenpeace. "This is a great opportunity to leverage members' everyday transactions to the benefit of our cause."

Aside from the philanthropic benefits of debit card programs such as this one, accepting debit cards in addition to credit card processing presents many advantages for businesses in terms of cash flow and customer satisfaction.ADNFCR-2514-ID-19418407-ADNFCR
