eBay leads the way in mobile commerce

By Joseph Triglioni

25/06/2010 - Smartphones are making some retailers early winners in the mobile commerce game.

One of the biggest winners to emerge is eBay. The online auction giant has become the top mobile retailer, making up ground it lost in the past few years to Amazon.com in online retail, according to BusinessWeek.

While eBay owns only about 3.3 percent of the emerging market, it is expecting to expand rapidly over the next few years. By 2015, analyst Mark Beccue of ABI Research expects mobile commerce to be a $119 global industry, up from $18.3 billion last year.

"Nobody knows what's going to happen in mobile. We need to be ready to spin on a dime," eBay's vice president for mobile, Steve Yankovich told the paper. One proposed application is eBay Fashion. It will offer a form of virtual dressing room that allows customers to use their camera phone to upload a picture of themselves and "try on" clothes.

With mobile shopping on the rise, consumers are turning more frequently to retailers who accept Visa and Mastercard. Mastercard and Visa have a total of 58 million credit card customers worldwide.
