Online payment processing over PayPal's platform rose by 27 percent on Black Friday this year, compared to 2008, the company recently reported.Black Friday kicked off the holiday shopping rush with high turnout in stores and online as the numbers provided by PayPal, which claims to process 16.5 percent of U.S. ecommerce, demonstrate. In addition to a strong online showing, total mobile payments increased by 310 percent from last year, according to the company. Sales were up by 19 percent on Black Friday in comparison to the average Friday in 2010, and total payment volume increased by 21 percent when compared to Thanksgiving shopping in 2008.
"With the convenience of shopping from a laptop or mobile phone, more people are choosing to avoid the long lines, parking chaos and early morning rush in exchange for great online deals available from the comfort of their homes," said Amanda Pires, senior director at PayPal.
The Associated Press reports that shoppers are buying more this year, but are committed to searching for deals. Black Friday made up about half of shopping over Thanksgiving weekend last year, accounting for 12.3 percent of holiday revenue.
