Ecommerce payment landscape continues to evolve

By Louis Georgakakis

27/12/2011 - The ecommerce landscape is constantly changing. With the advent of new devices such as mobile payment, smartphones and tablet computers, consumers are offered a variety of new options for purchasing goods and making payments online.

Yet surprisingly, many online retailers do not offer basic payment services, such as credit card processing, to ease the transaction process for customers. Visa, American Express and MasterCard are accepted virtually everywhere, but other networks such as Discover and China UnionPay are emerging, especially as China becomes a dominate economic power in the global marketplace.

"Apart from accepting these branded credit cards, large retailers also accept private-label cards and co-branded cards," writes Gagan Mehra for Practical Ecommerce. "Private-label cards are branded for a specific retailer and can only be used within that retailer's network of stores."

Some brands are introducing multiple payment options, wherein customers may split a purchase across multiple credit cards. As mobile payment technology asserts a more prominent role within the consumer landscape next year, it will be up to online merchants and card processors to develop new payment services and devices to meet consumer demands.
