Total online sales reached a record $35.3 billion during this year's holiday shopping season, according to data released Wednesday by analytics firm comScore. Online sales through the 56-day November-December period were up 15 percent from the same period last year. The week leading up to Christmas enjoyed similarly high figures, with a 16 percent increase in online sales over the same period in 2010.
Sales of digital content and subscriptions saw perhaps the largest surge in demand, accounting for 2.8 percent of all retail ecommerce sales through the period and more than 20 percent of all sales on Christmas Day. This is reflective of the types of gifts that were given this year - smartphones, tablets, e-readers - and the desire to fill these devices with content and subscriptions.
"Holiday e-commerce spending has remained strong throughout the season, and we have now reached a record $35 billion in U.S. online sales for the season-to-date," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. "We can now say with certainty that the $1.25 billion spent on Cyber Monday will rank it as the heaviest online spending day of the season."
