Finding the right merchant account for a business may be as daunting a task as finding the perfect mate online. If someone doesn't do their research, they could end up with a partner that isn't the right fit.The website Merchant Account Providers offers this simple suggestion: Try to search for a credit card processing company that offers a merchant account that suits your business and your customers.
Easier said than done. The search for the right merchant account requires a few steps.
First, merchants should know the fees associated with an account. According to Lisa Rogak of the Merchant Account Guide, business owners should look not just at the discount rate - the percentage a bank charges for each transaction, which usually runs from 1 percent to 5 percent - but also at the fixed per-transaction fee, the monthly service fee, the fee for when a credit card is typed instead of swiped and the initial charge to set up the account.
Fees vary depending upon the type of business, and the riskier the venture, the higher the fees.
"You may be temped to sign on the dotted line at the first one that comes your way, but in the long run, it pays to take your time," writes Rogak.
Second, businesses should take into account the cost of associated hardware and software.
Finally, Rogak suggests that owners make sure help is available from the merchant company when needed.
