FTC to review fledgling mobile payments industry

By Louis Georgakakis

30/01/2012 - The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is planning to scrutinize the burgeoning mobile payments industry this spring when it holds a workshop designed to understand the market's impact on technology, consumers and businesses alike.

Among the topics the workshop will address are the various technologies involved in mobile payments, how are they are funded and which will be used in the future. The FTC also hopes to assess the financial risk related to mobile payments in comparison to other payment services and technologies.

"There has been progress, but not as much as people had hoped for," said John Devlin, group director at market research company ABI Research. "We now also have a number of handsets with NFC, albeit a small number, and not as many as people were saying there would be at the start of the year."

The FTC says it aims to hear from as many consumers and business advocates as possible before the April 26 workshop, which will be held in Washington, D.C.

Mobile payments have been slow to take off in the U.S., in part because of considerable logistical barriers. Most payment devices, for example, require compatible mobile service, handsets, app developers and credit card processing.
