Gift cards used to support those in need during holiday season

By Joseph Trigliari

14/10/2010 - As the holiday season begins, the amount of charitable donations increases and, now, gift cards are being used to make a contribution.

In Manchester, Vemont, the Community Food Cupboard collects food to donate to needy families during the Thanksgiving holiday. This year, residents can contribute to the collection by purchasing gift cards at Shaws and donating them to the CFC. Shaws will also provide a reusable tote bag to the CFC for each $10 card donated.

The Sears Heroes at Home program also uses gift cards, but in support of the military. The program is currently accepting applications to be on its second annual Wish Registry. Active duty military are eligible and, if chosen, will receive free gift cards in time for Christmas.

The winners can swipe their gift cards at Sears' point-of-sale terminals to purchase items they need. In 2009, more than $6.7 million dollars was given to more than 20,000 families that registered.

In March 2010, Sears received the Peter Glen award at the RACies, an event that recognizes the best in retail advertising, for giving back to the community through the Heroes at Home program. Through the Wish Registry and other initiatives, Heroes at Home has raised over $20 million and helped more than 50,000 military families.
