GuestLogix develops smartphone-like POS device

By Joseph Trigliari

01/11/2010 - GuestLogix recently announced the launch of AVATA-m, a handheld point-of-sale terminal created for use by the airline industry.

The device, developed in partnership with ITWEll, resembles a smartphone and features a touch screen-enabled user interface. AVATA-m is smaller than previous GuestLogix POS devices and utilizes the Microsoft Windows CE/Mobile operating system.

"We believe this new POS device will enable our customers to further maximize the sales in their onboard stores as well as at other travel touch points such as the airline lounge and the departure gate," said Tom Douramakos, president and CEO of GuestLogix. "It delivers smartphone-like simplicity without sacrificing industrial-strength security, functionality or durability."

The company says that instead of retrofitting existing smartphones to be capable of reading credit cards, it sought to create a tailor-made alternative that would support the airline industry. The FCC-certified device has been tested for use aboard aircrafts.

GuestLogix also offers OnTouch, an airline concierge service, that offers tailored suggestions to travelers and is powered by retail technology that accepts credit and debit cards as well as cash.
