Residents in one Illinois city will soon be able to pay their water and sewer bills in a more convenient way than before, thanks to a recent vote by the city council. The Times reports that the Marseilles City Council approved an ordinance that would allow customers to pay their utility bills with credit cards either on the internet or at City Hall itself. The city will take part in the Illinois Funds Electronic System, which already works with more than 650 municipalities across the state.
Commissioner Bob Davis said that the city would be accepting MasterCard and Discover because the firms allowed the processing fees to be passed onto the customers. He said that the new service wouldn't cost the city anything
"The city will just offer the service, but not accept the penalty for offering it," Davis told the newspaper.
In Fort Wayne, Indiana, town officials recently made a similar announcement. The Journal Gazette reports that residents will be able to use credit cards to pay for utilities.
