Mobile devices continue to assert a more powerful role as business tools. According to The NPD Group's third quarter SMB Technology Monitor, nearly three-quarters of U.S. small and medium-sized businesses - 73 percent - intend to purchase tablet computers within the next 12 months. That figure is up from 68 percent in the second quarter.Interest in purchasing tablet computers is even stronger among large firms. According to the survey, 89 percent of large companies plan to purchase new tablets over the same period, up 8 percent from the second quarter.
Companies are using tablets for a variety of reasons, and the evolution of app marketplaces and add-on technologies, such as NFC, will only broaden their appeal. For example, a number of retailers, including the Apple store, have or are planning to use tablet devices as mobile payment devices. Associates will be able to process transactions wherever necessary, effectively bypassing the need for lines.
"Businesses of all sizes appear to be determined to capitalize on the tablet phenomenon," said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. "The iPad, just as it is in the consumer market, is synonymous for 'tablet' in the business market, leaving Apple poised to take advantage of the increased spending intentions of these SMBs."
