MasterCard suffers second attack on payment processing system

By Lauren Lindberg

05/01/2011 - MasterCard's payment processing was disrupted for a second time in December as its website was hacked and taken offline, reports Netcraft.

The attack is the second on MasterCard and one of many carried out by Anonymous, a loose association of hackers taking part in what they have dubbed "Operation Payback," a series of retaliations against organizations that have denied service to WikiLeaks after it released confidential diplomatic communications in early December.

Anonymous succeeded in disrupting the performance of MasterCard processing, as well as sites run by Visa, Amazon and PayPal.

Now that MasterCard's website is up and running again, the site features a statement explaing that "MasterCard has made significant progress in restoring full-service to its corporate website. Our core processing capabilities have not been compromised and cardholder account data has not been been put at risk. While we have seen limited interruption in some web-based services, cardholders can continue to use their cards for secure transactions globally."

MasterCard initially said that its internet problems were due to heavy traffic, but came out later about the SecureCode services being disrupted, according to Financial Times.
