Merchants expected to offer more rebates this holiday season

By Kristen Lawrence

23/11/2010 - Parago, a rebate program designer and manager, recently predicted that this holiday season retailers and manufacturers will offer consumers a record number of rebates.

"We predict a more than 30 percent increase in the number of rebates available at retailers this holiday season," said Juli Spottiswood, president and CEO of Parago. "While consumers enjoy the tremendous deals, marketers, who are looking for new ways to interact with their customers, benefit from the data and ongoing touch points rebates provide, in addition to the sales lift that they generate."

More than $2 billion rebates were processed by Parago this year. The company's research also shows that a large number of consumers have a favorable opinion of rebates, with 89 percent stating they have a positive or neutral perception of rebates.

Merchants can draw consumers away from their competitors' point-of-sale terminals by offering rebates. A markedly high 83 percent of consumers actively look for rebates, and 93 percent are willing to travel extra distances to go to a merchant that offers a similar product with a $15 rebate.

The success of Florida's Energy Star Appliance Program Rebate shows that rebates can increase consumer interest. The state offered local consumers a 20 percent rebate on energy efficient appliances, and demand for those products increased.
