There are several ways for criminals to conduct skimming attacks on a merchant's POS terminal, and businesses are advised to actively guard against and monitor for all of them.In a recent report, the Secret Service of Columbia, South Carolina - a city which has experienced an influx of skimming attacks lately - advised merchants and consumers to watch out for three types of skimming attacks in particular.
In one kind of attack, a "collusive store employee" secretly swipes a consumer's credit card on a portable device following the completion of a valid sale. In another, a skimming device is added to the front of a POS terminal, which can capture credit card information. And in a third type of attack, a skimming device is added to the inside of a POS terminal - sometimes accompanied by a hidden camera to find out the consumer's PIN - to capture the card data.
In addition to frequent physical inspection of POS terminals, experts advise merchants to educate their employees on how to spot potential skimming attacks and to screen workers thoroughly before hiring.
