While the mobile payments space has been struggling to take off in recent months, mobile banking appears firmly embedded in the consumer landscape.According to a report released this week by analytics firm comScore, 32.5 million Americans accessed banking information on their mobile devices at the end of the second quarter. That figure represents 13.9 percent of all mobile users.
Another 12.7 million mobile users report having accessed banking apps, a 45 percent increase from fourth quarter of 2010. Over the same period, there was a 23 percent increase in users accessing their credit card information through their mobile devices.
"The investments in mobile made by financial services institutions, along with the continued growth in smartphone adoption, have had a truly positive effect on the use of mobile financial services," said Sarah Lenart, comScore vice president for Marketing Solutions.
The emergence of tablets, smartphones and other web-enabled mobile devices is expected to expedite the financial service sector's position within the mobile commerce space. Recent mobile payment ventures involving American Express, Visa, Barclays and other firms provide an example of this trend.
