Moms prefer debit cards, Visa for holiday purchases

By Kristen Lawrence

22/12/2009 - As most businesses with a merchant account know, men may be seen as the head of the house, but women are often the primary purchasers - especially when it comes to holiday gifts. And this holiday season, the primary purchasers are choosing debit cards for their holiday shopping.

According to a survey from online shopping network CheapToday, the majority of moms surveyed use Visa for their holiday purchases and prefer debit to credit.

Another 31 percent reported using primarily cash or check payments, while 14 percent use MasterCard - and again prefer debit over credit - and 3 percent use private label, store-brand cards.

"Women power mom shoppers prefer debit, cash and other 'pay as you go' purchase options this holiday season," said Chris Hill, president & CEO of CheapToday. "Their primary motivation seems to be to avoid having to deal with large credit balances in 2010; reflective of a general trend away from relying on credit for holiday purchases."

This shift away from credit card payment processing and toward debit card processing has been well-documented lately, and is something analysts believe is a product of the recession and its emphasis on financial responsibility.ADNFCR-2514-ID-19527123-ADNFCR
