The old adage suggesting that throwing money at a problem does not make it go away certainly applies to payment processing security, as PCI compliance involves more than new security technology or other expensive measures. In fact, there is no such thing as "PCI in a box," payment processing industry experts told attendees at the recent Retail Technology Conference in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, CSP Daily News reported.
Instead of relying only on technology to solve all PCI compliance issues, merchants should designate someone in the organization as responsible for payment processing security "so he or she can 'own' it," said the news provider.
Smaller merchants in particular should take heed of this advice, as threats to small businesses are increasing, said James Kelly, product manager of security and compliance for Gilbarco Veeder Root.
"What's happening is that [data thieves] used to go after the big companies because they have access to millions of credit card transactions, but those corporations have been locking down their systems over the years," thereby leaving smaller merchants more vulnerable, he told attendees, according to CSP.
The idea that no single technology is a panacea for compliance has been expressed by Interac in reference to the ongoing rollout of chip card technology, a move that the debit card processing network has advocated. Interac recently reminded Canadian merchants that they still need to have adequate payment processing security even if they use chip card technology.
