The National Retail Foundation's "2010 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Action Survey," conducted by BIGresearch, contains holiday sales predictions as well as anticipated consumer behavior.According to the study, holiday sales should rise approximately 2.3 percent this year in comparison to 2009 for a total of $447.1 billion. Although the survey indicates that consumers will spend an average of $688.87 each, price is still important. More than half of shoppers polled plan to take advantage of sales, and 40.6 percent plan to use coupons at point-of-sale terminals.
"While consumers have shown they are once again willing to spend on what's important to them, they will still be very conscientious about price," said NRF chief economist Jack Kleinhenz.
NRF research also shows that mobile shopping will increase this season, especially amongst the 18- to 24-year-old demographic. Forty-five percent of the members of this age group are expected to look for or purchase gifts using a mobile phone.
Western Union Payments also conducted a holiday sales survey and found that only six percent plan on spending more on holiday shopping this year, and an additional 60 percent plan to set holiday budgets.
