Businesses in the Vancouver and Whistler areas whose merchant services include Visa acceptance have already seen a spike in their payment processing activity from the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Visa announced this week. Almost US$5.2 million was spent on Visa cards on the opening day of the Olympic Games - Friday, February 12 - in British Columbia, representing an increase of 46 percent over the Visa payment processing figures for the same day in 2009.
U.S. visitors spent the most that day, hitting US$2.3 million. China followed with nearly US$400,000, and the UK came in third with US$290,000.
"By harnessing our global reach, marketing experience and customer relationships, Visa is in a unique position to create short- and long-term value not only for the host city, Vancouver, but for many of the markets in which we do business," said Michael Lynch, head of global sponsorships at Visa. "One of our goals for these Olympic Winter Games is to leave a legacy of improved infrastructure and higher Visa penetration of products and services in the Canadian marketplace."
Vis has been an official sponsor of the Olympic Games since 1986, and is the only card brand accepted at official Olympic events.
