Businesses in Ontario whose merchant services include debit card processing may have been - or may soon be - targets of debit card fraud, as there have been approximately 200 incidents of debit card fraud, the Canadian Press reports. The incidents are believed to be localized in Windsor, Lasalle and Amherstburg, and police say they are likely a result of an organized crime group in Quebec. The group is believed to have stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars already.
A similar story appeared in late January when Ontario and Durham police officers arrested nine people for debit card fraud and POS terminal tampering.
Payment processing security experts note that debit card fraud is a particularly important issue for merchants to be aware of, because stolen or forged debit cards give criminals instant access to a consumer's bank accounts.
To protect against this kind of payment processing fraud, merchants are advised to check their POS terminals regularly for any physical tampering, and may want to consider using security cameras in those areas.
