Parking meters will accept credit cards

By Lauren Lindberg

21/04/2011 - A brand-new set of solar-powered parking meters in Redondo Beach, California, was recently rolled out as part of a pilot program. The meters will accept credit cards for the first time.

The Daily Breeze reports that 50 new meters will be placed on the west side of The Esplanade, for a program that will last three months. According to city leadership, the new devices will not only make it more convenient for drivers who may not have enough change, but it will also decrease the cost of maintenance.

"People do not normally carry around a lot of change, we think," said Redondo Beach Police Chief Joe Leonardi in an interview with the news source. Instead of having someone come to the meters and remove the change, the data can be processed wirelessly from a remote location.

In Elm City, Connecticut, lawmakers are considering similar parking meters that would accept credit cards. The Yale Daily News reports that the city's board of aldermen unanimously recommended spending $550,000 for 280 meters that would be able to process card payments.
