PayPal to accept credit cards without requiring registration

By Pivotal Payments

28/06/2010 - Online payment gateway PayPal will begin allowing software developers to accept payments for their "apps" without requiring potential customers to sign up for a PayPal account.

The program, called Guest Payments, lets merchants accept credit cards through the payment service without having to redirect clients to PayPal's own website.

PayPal developer network senior Naveed Anwar said the program will help to alleviate "the complications merchants, developers and startups face in accepting credit cards."

The online payment industry is a growing sector with intense competition. The change allows PayPal to signal a readiness to make the service more customer friendly, an attitude that may soon be adopted by other credit card companies, reports PCR magazine. Visa has begun experimenting with a similar service, called PayClick, in Australia.

PayPal's Guest Payments program is currently supported by merchants such as Apple's iTunes Store and social networking platform Habbo.
