Following feedback from merchants, financial institutions, vendors, merchant account providers, qualified security assessors, merchant trade groups and more, the PCI Security Standards Council has announced that it is entering the third phase of data security standards development. The PCI SSC and its board of advisors will now discuss the various problems, solutions, comments and opinions gathered from various members of the payment processing chain, to determine what revisions and additions need to be made to the PCI DSS, the governing body of standards for payment processing security.
"The council received pointed and meaningful feedback on the PCI standards from the global stakeholders across the payment chain over the past four months, which we will evaluate in depth in order to ensure the standards are as effective as they can be," said Bob Russo, general manager of the PCI Security Standards Council. "Our structured, but flexible, lifecycle process allows us to respond effectively to new security challenges so that organizations and assessors have the right tools for their security programs."
Among the areas being discussed are logging best practices, reducing scope for PCI DSS, building awareness of PCI compliance among merchants worldwide, and new security technologies such as end-to-end encryption, tokenization, chip technology and virtual terminals.
