Prepaid segment to continue showing strong growth, experts say

By Lauren Lindberg

18/03/2010 - The prepaid payment processing market represents an area of strong future growth as the world's unbanked citizens need a way to function in today's increasingly paperless society, said an industry expert.

According to Julie Kurd, director of financial services, healthcare and insurance practice for research and consulting firm Chadwick Martin Bailey, the prepaid sector is only going to continue experiencing significant growth.

"When one thinks of the staggering estimate of 70,000,000 people who are 'unbanked' or 'under banked,' that is, living paycheck to paycheck, overdrawing their bank accounts to steep fees (if they still have an account), sometimes using pawn shops, payday loans and other financial instruments that come with steep fees, the prepaid world is asking: Why couldn't life be better for these people?" Kurd wrote in a post on the CMB blog.

In the post, Kurd discussed the recent IIR Prepaid Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, quoting several industry experts on the importance of prepaid. For example, Alpesh Choksi, president of prepaid for American Express, told attendees that he expects prepaid "to transform the lives of people around the world."

Businesses whose merchant services do not include prepaid card processing may want to invest in a new POS terminal that is capable of accepting this payment option, to prepare for the ongoing growth of this segment. ADNFCR-2514-ID-19677237-ADNFCR
