Small businesses often think they are invulnerable to security breaches because there is not as much valuable data stored on their servers as there would be for larger firms. However, any business whose merchant services include debit and credit card processing is a valuable attack target, and should protect its payment processing infrastructure - along with general IT infrastructure - accordingly.
One of the most important ways to do so, reported PCWorld, is to educate employees on how to detect and avoid common hacking techniques, such as spear phishing. This technique involves hackers targeting certain members of an organisation - such as those who would have access to sensitive information - and emailing them link bait that they would be likely to open, such as an invitation to a prestigious conference.
When the individual clicks on the link, it can insert malware onto the user's system, potentially stealing sensitive information or even turning the computer into a bot.
Experts advise businesses, especially those that handle payment processing data, to educate their employees on how to recognize these kinds of attacks, as well as to patch their systems regularly.
