Newly released results from a poll of Canadian credit card holders indicates that the majority prefer their rewards in the form of cash. In the survey, conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Royal Bank of Canada, more than half of respondents (58 percent) said they had a credit card with a rewards program. Thirty-three percent of those Canadian card holders said they preferred cash back rewards. While other forms of rewards incentives such as travel and merchandise also received votes from participants in the survey, they were not as popular as cash.
When asked what they were using their cards for, 88 percent of Canadians said they used them to pay for travel, and 53 percent said they used them for retail purchases. In addition, 57 percent said they used their cards for dining, gas or entertainment and 34 percent used their cards at drug stores.
Respondents also indicated that an easy-to-understand rewards program is best. "Our clients have told us they want a simple and straightforward cash-back card," said RBC Credit Cards vice president Sean Amato-Gauci.
RBC is planning an expansion that both card holders and those who provide merchant services may want to be aware of. According to the Toronto Sun, the bank recently revealed plans to hire more staff members across Europe, and said it was considering purchasing a small investment bank based in London.
