Paying for transportation may soon be as simple as a swipe for all taxis in San Francisco. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is debating a new rule that would force all cab drivers in the city to accept credit and debit cards as payment, the San Francisco Examiner reports.
Noticing a recent surge in payment processing fees among cab companies due to the payment form's popularity, the agency decided to reconsider a credit card initiative that has been discussed for years, the paper writes. Mayor Gavin Newsom, in his 2006 State of the City address, supported such a measure.
"There's an obvious convenience for customers. But theres also a safety for drivers. Accepting credit cards means less cash in the cab and less chance for theft," Mark Gruberg, a driver and spokesman for the United Taxicab Workers union, told the Examiner.
Nevada has recently been developing new rules for paying taxi frees with credit or debit cards. Last month, a proposed $3 processing fee per transaction was approved by regulators. It will go into effect in late August or September, according to the Associated Press.
