Finding parking in San Francisco may have gotten a bit easier - or at least more convenient. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency announced this week it is launching PayByPhone parking payment service, which allow drivers to pay for parking meters with the use of their mobile phones.Provider PayByPhone is currently adding NFC-enabled stickers to the city's 30,800 parking spaces. The tiny devices will offer drivers the option of paying for parking with compatible mobile devices in addition to apps and web services for regular phones. Drivers can also call a toll-free number to pay.
"This is one of the largest deployments of NFC technology in the United States and shows the practical benefits this technology can deliver in terms of ease of use and convenience," said Neil Podmore, vice president of business development at PayByPhone. "We expect this to help kickstart the more widespread adoption and understanding of the practical benefits of NFC in 2012."
A number of other cities, including New York and Salt Lake City, have adopted similar mobile payment systems for parking meters. The trend marks just one of myriad ways mobile payments are being used to optimize the transaction process.
