What kind of year will 2012 be? It's difficult to say, but business experts point to a few key trends that are worth considering. Social media, for example, is expected to continue to revolutionize the way in which businesses and consumers interact with one another.More importantly, analysts expect social media to gather a more leading role in ecommerce, as networks begin to offer social "credits" and points to pay for goods. This is also true for m-commerce. Location-based marketing and communications will allow consumers to reap one-time deals and receive messages according to their proximity to a local business.
Similarly, the year is also expected to mark a stronger push toward an business landscape where mobile payment technology is commonplace.
Some 35 million handsets were sold in 2011 with NFC-enabled technology. That figure is expected to reach 80 million by the end of 2012, according to IMS Technology.
"Security is a crucial issue," acknowledges Hessie Jones for the Calgary Herald. "Starbucks has already enabled its rewards program through a mobile app. Who's poised to deliver this in Canada? Rogers is expected to launch its offering in Q1 2012 with Visa Canada as the 'expected' payment provider."
