Starbucks is looking to launch a mobile payments app for its branches in the U.K. The Seattle-based coffee giant announced this week that the app, which will launch in January, has already proved successful in the U.S., with more than 20 million transactions made since June.Experts point out the clear value of being able to pay for beverages and other products through one's own mobile device, as it will help to reduce lines and expedite the transaction process.
The app will be available for the iPhone and will allow users to integrate their Starbucks Card to make payments through a barcode scanned at the till.
"We wanted to find a way for them to pay in the quickest way possible," said Brian Waring, vice president of marketing for Starbucks in the U.K. "Because our customers want it, we have created our own custom-built mobile payment technology rather than waiting for the near field communication technology which is currently not widely available."
A recent report by ABI Research projected total worldwide NFC-based purchases to surpass $100 billion by 2016, which would firmly establish the technology as mainstram in both the U.S. and Europe.
