While mobile payments are not expected to go mainstream in 2012, merchants can expect this year to be another breakthrough year for m-commerce and related technology. In its annual survey of mobile insiders, industry analyst Chetan Sharma Consulting found nearly 60 percent of respondents claim mobile payments will experience a breakthrough this year, and 40 percent said the same for mobile commerce. Last year, less than 50 percent cited mobile payments as the breakthrough category for 2011.
Interestingly, market insiders pointed to the financial services industry as most likely to define the mobile payment services space in 2012, with nearly 40 percent of respondents agreeing with this sentiment. That figure is up from 30 percent in last year's survey.
"Interestingly, after a year of moves by mobile carriers worldwide to control mobile payments, the number of panelists who believe operators will control mobile payments actually dropped from last year," reports Mobile Payments Today. "In 2011, around 17 percent of respondents said operators would define the space. That number fell to 12 percent this year."
