Target trading gift cards for used electronics

By Kristen Lawrence

27/08/2010 - U.S. retailer Target has announced that it will be accepting customers' old technology to get them to start swiping at the store's point-of-sale terminals.

Customers can now bring their iPhones, iPod Touches, cell phones and video games to selected stores and walk out with a gift card that can be worth as little as a "few dollars up to more than $200 per item depending on the product and its condition," CNET News reports.

So far, only customers who live in California will have access to the service, but the company plans to expand the trade-ins to 850 stores by the end of the year. For those who cannot wait, however, they can swap their DVDs and other used electronics online for a gift card.

"Target Electronics Trade-In offers our guests an opportunity to upgrade their consumer electronics items for less," said Target senior vice president Mark Schindele.

Target is not the only company offering customers gift cards for their used electronics. More than 600 Best Buy locations are accepting pre-owned video games in exchange for a $20 Best Buy gift card.
