The taxi industry in Las Vegas is hoping to turn a proposal to charge a $3 payment processing for using debit or credit cards into law.The Las Vegas Sun reports that the Nevada Taxicab Authority, which is in charge of regulating the industry, is seeking to make the minimum payment a requirement through Assembly Bill 351. The organization contends that the fees for accepting credit cards are necessary for cabs to turn a profit because of high transaction costs. According to the NTA, the average cab fare in the city was $13.42, with the surcharge totaling 22 percent.
However, critics of the bill say the legislation does not benefit the public and that the increased charge would ultimately force people to turn away from the plastic payment method.
"There's good public policy, then there's self-serving efforts. This is a self-serving effort," said William Uffelman, president and CEO of the Nevada Bankers Association, in an interview with the news provider.
Credit card fees have been the topic of conversation for taxi drivers in other cities as well. At a recent San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board meeting, more than 50 cab drivers showed up to protest a 5 percent fee charged to passengers using credit cards, the San Francisco Sentinel reports.
