After a taxi customer in Indianapolis had her credit card number stolen from a carbon paper manual sliding device used to imprint her card for payment, the city is proposing a rule that would require all cabs to be equipped with fully-functioning wireless devices for secure credit card processing. The regulations, imposed by the Department of Code Enforcement, could go into effect this summer, reports the Indianapolis Star.
Some cabs in the city already accepted credit cards, writes WXIN-TV, but the old carbon paper swipers made it easy to create counterfeit credit cards. When Julie Cook-Anderson paid for her cab ride in November after an Indianapolis Colts game, the driver used the imprint of the card to make a counterfeit card. Eighteen hours later, he and another man drained $1,040 from her checking account to buy two laptops at Walmart.
The proposed credit card system upgrades legislation would take effect on July 1, says the Star, meaning the city's 700 cabs would have until then to install secure, wireless credit card readers for the safety and convenience of their customers.
According to USA Today, updated credit card processing programs do more than keep riders safe and happy. With them in place, companies can better track and audit employee expenses.
