The m-commerce space is something of a hot topic of late. While the term itself is fairly broad and can refer to anything from mobile payment technology to smartphone banking apps, the mobile landscape itself is a sensationally expansive marketplace.A recent Juniper Research survey found mobile payment transactions are likely to triple over the next four years, surpassing $170 billion worldwide. But there's something to be said about the wider mobile industry as well.
The evolution of cloud technology and its merging with established technology platforms may revolutionize how consumers and businesses view mobile devices. When it comes to commerce, mobile phones will act as both wallets and processing systems. Small and large retailers will be able to charge and accept payments with smartphones and tablets.
However, to achieve this end, the mobile space must continue to broaden. Indeed, it must extend well beyond commerce interests. For example, a survey released this week by Insight Research determined enterprise mobility solutions will drive nearly $40 billion in annual sales for app developers by 2016.
Mobile providers and users need to consider how their own services can be complemented or aided by emerging mobile technologies.
