Tips for bringing a credit card abroad

By Lauren Lindberg

12/08/2011 - While Europe continues to reel from devastating fiscal crises that threaten to tank markets throughout the world, tourism is not expected to subside. That being said, U.S. consumers considering packing their credit cards for a visit overseas may want to review a few things before boarding a plane.

First of all, depending on your issuer, credit card transaction fees can skyrocket when you cross the border. It's a good idea to go over these expenses before using your card, as cash may be a better payment option in some regions.

It may also be a good idea to memorize your PIN numbers and other critical financial information instead of writing them down. Many times, card companies will contact you to verify that you made a certain transaction and request a PIN, but having that information written down poses a greater danger if a wallet or suitcase is stolen.

"Find which credit card is the best option to use overseas: avoid huge fees and hassle by calling each of your credit card companies and discovering how they treat international use," writes Stephanie Ryder for E-Wisdom. "Sometimes little-known facts or small variations from card to card can produce big savings."
