VeriFone joins with Gemalto for smart card solution

By Kristen Lawrence

07/01/2011 - VeriFone Systems and Gemalto, providers of digital security, are continuing their partnership into the new year, according to TMCnet.

Gemalto's point-of-sale solutions business was handed over to VeriFone in October and the two companies will be collaborating their efforts in the EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) chip card field as they tweak their system for debit and credit card processing authentication. They are currently discussing plans for jointly introducing EMV chip and pin solutions for the U.S. market.

VeriFone also recently announced that Gemalto will be their preferred supplier of machine-to-machine wireless modules and related solutions, adds the website.

The ever-increasing partnership is a symbol that chip card and contactless technologies are a growing trend at retail shops and other businesses. Accompanying the added convenience of mobile payments is a greater need for data protection and security at the point of sale, which VeriFone and Gemalto hope to help provide.

"This unique partnership between wold leaders assists both companies in focusing on key strategic areas while relying on a trusted partner to provide complementary solutions," said VeriFone CEO Douglas G. Bergeron.
