VeriFone to increase presence in payment-enabled media marketplace

By Lauren Lindberg

31/12/2009 - VeriFone, one of the leading payment processing providers, announced this week that its next big strategic initiative will be to increase its presence in the payment-enabled media marketplace, piggybacking on the success of its taxi cab payment system in New York City.

The company noted that as more and more people rely on electronic payment processing instead of cash or cheques, the opportunities abound for providing POS terminals to people in a variety of settings.

"The payment experience provides a unique opportunity to reach a variety of audience segments, such as premium business travelers heading to and from an airport, utilizing large, interactive color displays that are in front of the consumer for a considerable period," said Douglas G. Bergeron, CEO of VeriFone. "Taxis and other select point-of-sale venues automatically segment audiences to provide highly desirable advertising efficiency."

VeriFone has already experienced significant success in its taxi cab payment system implemented in New York City, as has the city's taxi cab industry - a recent report from the New York Times found that offering debit and credit card processing to taxi riders has increased the industry's revenue, potentially keeping it afloat during the recession.ADNFCR-2514-ID-19536403-ADNFCR
