Visa and Coca-Cola announce chip card-enabled Olympic vending machines

By Lauren Lindberg

11/01/2010 - Canadians may get a glimpse into the future of electronic payment processing transactions during the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, as Visa and Coca-Cola announced Monday that Coca-Cola vending machines at the Olympic Games will be equipped with Visa payWave vending machines.

This means that Olympic Game attendees can wave their Visa cards in front of the vending machine to pay for their transaction, "leaving enough time to get back to their seats for the next event," said Mike Bradley, head of products for Visa Canada.

Most of the payWave-enabled machines will be located in official venues for the Olympic Games, including the Olympic and Paralympic Villages in Whistler and Vancouver, as well as two Vancouver training centres.

Visa Canada noted that its payWave initiative is "closely aligned" with the comapny's migration to chip card technology, which is a rapidly growing segment of the payment processing technology sector.

Experts say that chip card technology can actually enhance payment processing security, as chip cards are almost impossible to duplicate.

Visa has been an official sponsor of the Olympic Games since 1986.ADNFCR-2514-ID-19551399-ADNFCR
