Visa is hoping to make credit card information more secure for consumers, merchants and payment processors. The credit card company has announced a global effort to reduce the amount of sensitive card information stored in merchant payment systems by requiring merchant receipts for dispute resolution to present a shortened or false card number in place of the full 16-digit one.
The National Retail Federation supported Visa's efforts, agreeing that merchants should not be required to store complete card numbers in case of card retrieval requests. Additionally, the NRF said that this effort will help merchants understand what information must be stored and for how long.
"By reducing the amount of vulnerable data in merchant systems that must be protected from compromise, merchants can see greater security as well as more streamlined compliance needs," Eduardo Perez, head of global payment system security for Visa, said.
Visa has had a busy month. Spending by World Cup fans in South Africa on Visa-branded credit cards exceeded US$176 million between June 1 and June 25, representing a 65 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
