Visa's Olympic sponsorship by the numbers

By Lauren Lindberg

15/02/2010 - Visa has been the official sponsor of the Olympic Games since 1986, and consequently, it is the only credit card processing method available for Olympic attendees, athletes and coaches.

To meet the high demand for credit card processing at the already underway Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, Visa has deployed more than 800 POS terminals in 250 merchant locations, including the International Broadcast Centre, the Main Press Centre, the Olympic and Paralympic Villages and the Olympic Superstore, the company announced.

There will also be 3,000 ATMs in Vancouver and 60 in Whistler from which Visa cardholders can withdraw money, and there are 5,000 retailers, restaurants and service providers in both areas that accept Visa.

Visa has also released a number of prepaid cards for the Olympics, partnering with RBC, Scotiabank, Vancity and Citizens Bank of Canada. One series of cards features images of athletes in eight Olympic and two Paralympic Winter Games, such as snowboarding, alpine skiing and ice hockey.

Visa's recently released first quarter 2010 earnings showed that the company's $2-billion GAAP net operating revenue - representing a year-over-year increase of 13 percent - was largely driven by payment processing revenues.ADNFCR-2514-ID-19617235-ADNFCR
